Most of our customers who are installing home or business security cameras want to be able to protect their home and business, but most importantly, they normally want to view the security cameras over the internet so that they can watch what happens while they are away.  This is where our Alnet PC-Based DVR Cards/Software really come into play.  These systems provide the highest quality of recording from traditional CCTV cameras and IP security cameras alike.

This professional grade software comes in DVR Cards that are well suited for both home/small business and Enterprise/Professional alike.  Not only do these DVR cards provide professional quality recording and best-in-class playback capabilities, but the software also provides excellent remote viewing capabilities from a PC, Laptop, iPhone, iPad, iPod, BlackBerry PDA phone, Android PDA and Windows Mobile PDA phones.

Alnet PCI and PCIe DVR Cards Record Security Cameras onto your PC

The Alnet PC-Based DVR and NVR software allows you to stay connected with your home or business even while on the go, by allowing you to view live security cameras as well as playback pre-recorded footage from your DVR server right from your phone.  But don’t take our word for it, try out the remote viewing for yourself by downloading the app to your PDA phone.

iPhone users:   Go to the App Store and search for ‘CMS Mobile’ – a free app

Android and BlackBerry Users: browse to http://mobi.platinum-cctv.com on your PDA phone.

Each of these pieces of software come loaded with several demo servers that will allow you to connect in and view some live cameras.  These demo servers are public, and hundreds of people are connected in at once from around the world, so the video might be a bit slower.  However, you will be able to adjust the quality of the cameras in the settings to achieve smoother video as well.  The same CMS mobile app will be used to connect to your Alnet PC-Based DVR once you install it as well.

Frequently asked questions:
1.  Will the Alnet CMS Mobile Application work wtih my standalone or other brand PC based DVR system – No.  The CMS Mobile application will only work with our Alnet PC-Based DVR Cards.

2.  Can I use my existing cameras with your Alnet DVR Cards?  Yes, if you have an existing system, you can simply unplug the cameras from your current DVR and plug it into a PC with the Alnet DVR Card installed instead.

3.  Can the Alnet DVR Card work with IP cameras too? - Yes, you can add an IP Camera license to any Alnet DVR Card system.  IP Licenses are available in packs of 4 to add IP cameras to an Alnet DVR Card system.  Otherwise, for IP only systems, find our Alnet Netstation IP Camera software

Home Security Cameras saved $800 in damages

We have always been very careful who we let in our house for services, and of course we also always check for insurance (and keep a copy of it for the liability).  But even with the strictest screening, accidents happen…even when they aren’t accidental.

As workaholics, we rarely have enough time for much of anything, so cleaning has been one of those things that we almost have to get a little help with from time to time.  Our security cameras have helped us cut short service from several local maid services when we have had things stolen (sometimes as ridiculous as a maid literally stuffing her purse with soda from our fridge).  But little did I think that we would actually save ourselves from a very large expense with those cameras.

Yes, this fan WAS running on high, while being cleaned

Face blurred to protect the guilty

However, one day our maid service (longest running we have had) expanded and hired a new maid…one who apparently was not as careful…or logical as previous employees.  Unfortunately, this employee decided that it would be prudent to stick a duster in front of the blades of 3 of our ceiling fans, as they were running on high…without turning the fan off first.  Then she proceeded to dust the 3 fans while holding them stopped, with the motor still running.  Needless to say, it was less than a matter of 48 hours before the fans all began clicking, followed by a grinding within another day.

The same maid nearly destroyed this chair and speaker

Giving the maid service the benefit of the doubt, we of course contacted them directly, because we figured that after being a customer for 2 years, we owed them the option of how to deal with the issue.  At first they seemed like they would take care of the replacement of the fans…but as weeks turned into months, we began experiencing more problems, outside doors being left wide open, chairs being knocked over into walls and more.  And still no news back on our fans.  Finally got back in touch with them, and sent them the replacement cost of the fans.  Home Depot actually had a great price on them, almost the same model that we had.  They weren’t quite as nice as the ones that we had initially, but oh well that is life.

Of course, once confronted with the price of the replacements, then the push-back began.  Of course stating that we didn’t have any proof that they wrecked our fans.  Well, that is where they were truly wrong.  Luckily enough, one of our hidden indoor security cameras was aimed high enough to show exactly what happened to the ceiling fans.  So I sent the video back to them…and we stopped hearing back from them…probably due as much to the fact that we had to fire them for leaving our garage door wide open leaving open access to our house to anyone on the street on a subsequent visit as anything else.  So finally we just had to take it to the insurance company directly.

Hidden Nanny Spy Cameras have many uses

Well dealing with the insurance company was probably the easiest thing that I have ever had to do.  After receiving the video clips from our cameras, there weren’t any questions…not a single one at all.  Shortly after came a check for the replacement fans, and the labor to have them installed.  Saving us almost $800 in added expenses from a careless employee of our maid service.

A nice victory for home security cameras.  Sometimes the best benefit is saving you from those little, or not so little, unexpected expenses.

Watching Security Cameras on BlackBerry Storm

View Security Cameras on BlackBerry Storm

This week has been very popular for customers who have BlackBerry Storm phones, so I figured I would take a few minutes and talk about the differences between security camera remote viewing.  Apparently there are not that many systems out there that will support the BlackBerry Storm PDA phones (like we didn’t already know that ;)   But we have 2 different types of systems with varying remote viewing capabilities, both of which are fully compatible with PDA remote viewing on your BlackBerry Storm and Storm2 phones.

Standalone DVR Systems:
The first type of system that supports BlackBerry viewing, is our H.264 Standalone DVR and Standalone DVR systems.  These camera systems consist of a DVR recorder that is about the size of a VCR that your indoor or outdoor security cameras will plug into.  This DVR connects to the internet, and allows for viewing security cameras from IE browser on your computer as well as a basic remote viewing through the browser on your iPhone, Android phone or BlackBerry phone.  With this type of system, you van view up to 4 cameras at once in the browser of your phone, and it will update the image up to 1 time per second.

Alnet PC-Based DVR Cards and Systems:
For improved remote viewing from PC, laptop, PDA and BlackBerry Storm phones, our Alnet PC-Based DVR Cards and Systems are a great choice.  These systems have an application designed directly for the iPhone, Android phones, Windows Mobile PDA phones, and BlackBerry Phones (different app for each BlackBerry Model).  With this remote viewing, it is a live streaming video to your phone, allowing you to see what is happening right now, as well as playback pre-recorded footage right in the palm of your hand.

No matter which type of system you select, both of these systems are compatible with the BlackBerry Storm PDA phones.  And of course, as with all of our home and business security camera systems…there are NO MONTHLY FEES…the way it should be.  Our systems use your own internet connection, and when you connect into it, you are connecting directly to your own internet connection, so only you have access to your own security cameras.

In the past, home and business owners who want to have cameras inside their homes had to choose between having the cameras hidden so it was not obvious that they had cameras, or having nightvision.  This is because of the fact that hidden pinhole style cameras did not have the ability to have infrared illuminators.  However, our new CD-7360 Hidden Motion Detector Spy Camera with Infrared LEDs includes a 540 TVL low light Sony CCD image sensor provides even better clear color video and then turns on hidden IR illuminators at night for infrared night vision up to 45′ maximum even in pitch black conditions.

Got Geovision? Find out what you are missing.

Geovision DVR Cards and software are some of the most prevalent on the internet, both legitimate licensed software and illegally pirated versions.  However, users of the Geovision software really dont know what they are missing.  The playback of the Geovision DVR software is almost identical to our BUDGET series DVR card (Who’s software was also written in Taiwan).  While it does allow for playback, it is very difficult to use and very slow to playback.

GeoVision DVR Cards have only basic playback capabilities

GeoVision DVR Card Basic Playback

Above is a snapshot of playback in the GeoVision DVR software.  On the right hand side, you select your camera, then click the year, month and day.  Then the software will show you a list of files, showing all of the times that the camera was recording throughout the day.  If you dont know the time of the event, you will have to play each of the files through to find the video that you need.

Instead, our Alnet Professional line of DVR cards and software provide you the ability to spend less time playing back video, and more time living your life instead.  When you open up the Alnet systems archive (locally or remotely), you will see a time-bar across the top of the screen showing in green all of the times that the camera recorded throughout the course of the day.  Hovering your mouse over the green in the time bar will open a preview pane that will show you what is happening at that point of the video.  As you slide your mouse from side to side, it will even update the preview pane.  This makes scanning through your video extremely fast.  Once you find the important section of the video, simply click and start the playback.

Installing Infrared Home Security Cameras

Outdoor Home Security Camera with Infrared

CD-5260 Outdoor Home security camera with infrared night vision

When installing your home security cameras, there are many things to consider.  During the installation services, it is important not only to select a security camera that will provide the range of infrared night vision that you require, but also it is important that it is mounted properly.  Even the best IR night vision camera will provide poor night vision if the camera is not angled properly for the area that is being viewed.

Home security camera pointed at building

Home security IR camera improperly aligned

For example, the camera to the right is on of our CD-5260 Bullet style infrared night vision cameras.  These cameras generally have very good night vision up to 65′ maximum distance, but in the case of this particular installation, the camera was mounted in such a way that the siding on the house was reflecting the infrared light back at the camera.  This added unneccessary light causes the image sensor’s iris to close which dims the view to prevent it from completely washing out the view.  This operation is normal and is what prevents it from washing out the picture if someone walks right up to the camera, unlike cheaper cameras that would simply show a white ghosted images.  So since the siding is reflecting too much light back, you end up with a dimly lit area where the view was important and a very bright view of the house’s siding instead.  Also of note in this picture, the sunshield of the camera is slid too far forward, which is reflecting additional IR light back at the camera (shown on the top corners).

Realigned home security camera

Realigned home security camera

To repair this camera’s view, don’t replace the camera, instead readjust the view of the camera and slide the sunshield back out of the view to eliminate the added reflected light and now the IR light from the camera will reflect properly from the area below, delivering a better quality picture.

When mounting your Infrared outdoor home cameras, make sure that you pay attention to the area that the camera will be viewing.  Obstructions or areas that reflect more light back than your main viewing area can definitely reduce the brightness of the main area.  Check out our full line of home security cameras online.

Integrating our H.264 Standalone DVR with your Alarm System

Connect your Alarm system to your DVR

Alarm inputs on our H.264 Standalone DVRs

More advanced home and business owners may wish to have instantaneous notification via email when their alarm system or one of their alarm sensors are triggered.  This functionality is built-in to our H.264 series standalone DVRs already.  With each of our 4, 9 and 16-channel H.264 Standalone DVRs, there are inputs and outputs built-in to the DVR.

Most home and business alarm systems contain a NO (Normally Open) or NC (Normally Closed) circuit which is designed for use with a DVR system like our Standalone DVRs or PC Based DVR cards.  This circuit can send a signal to your DVR to let your DVR know that the alarm system has been set off.  Inside of our DVR, the input signal can then be configured to record from a camera for a specified interval, control a PTZ camera to move to a specific preset position, trigger one of the DVRs built-in outputs or even send email alerts.

H.264 Standalone DVR Alarm System Configuration

Configure alarm inputs to Trigger Alerts

Additional inputs on the back of the DVR can be used with any traditional Alarm sensors such as PIR motion sensors, door contact sensors, window break detectors, flood sensors and more.  Up to 4 total devices can be connected to the DVR to trigger alerts.  These added alarm sensors can be connected to your alarm system, or they can be added sensors that only trigger the DVR if desired.

For outputs, our H.264 Standalone DVRs have 4 low voltage outputs that can be used to trigger alarm system actions with NO or NC circuits, or trigger relays that can control lights, control automated doors, etc.  Anything that can be controlled with a NO or NC circuit can now be controlled remotely from a PC with IE browser while you are viewing your cameras too.
